He has been raised to be entirely self-sufficient, dependent on no one -- especially "the government" -- for help. His plan to make his way to Alaska to join other survivalists is waylaid when the new owner of the property finds him and turns him over to the state. Moon tells his story in homespun prose, his loneliness bleeding through his determination to make it on his own and his overwhelming love for the outdoors. So thoroughly does first-time author Key inhabit his protagonist that readers will feel Moon's happy amazement at such comforts as the high quality of jail food. When, with two other boys, Moon escapes the orphanage-cum-detention-center he has been placed in and tries to live with them in the wild, he realizes that he needs companionship and that, moreover, his Pap might have been wrong. This weighty moral understanding emerges naturally, sharing space easily with topnotch survival action and exuberantly illicit romps in a beat-up pickup. It's a winningly fresh and sympathetic look at a life and culture almost never seen in children's books.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://stanthonymediacenter.blogspot.com/2011/12/st-anthony-middle-school-reads-alabama.html' title='ST. All I can say is that the books are intense and addicting. If I wrote anything else, I would give the whole book away. But when she goes off to the art college of her dreams, she has to stay with him. The story is dramatic and sad and sometimes very frustrating, but all in all, it's a good read.

Alexis says: The Demonata series by Darren Shan--may I just say, is very gruesome and action-packed. These books are all about demons and humans who have the ability to tap into magic. Sometimes it can get very confusing, but they all go together, and it pieces all of these lives into one. What exactly IS steampunk?

There are varying definitions of what makes a book "fit" this classification. Some define steampunk as a type of sci-fi that focuses on the science of the Victorian age (indeed, many of the books--including Soulless-- take place during this time period, but not necessarily all of them). Others suggest it shows people "struggling to push the technology of yesterday into supporting the society of tomorrow." Probably the best definition comes from the Minneapolis Public Library site which states it simply as "Adventures featuring alternate history and low-tech machines that do very high-tech things."

No matter how you define it, the books are worth checking out!

More Reviews by Alexis

Alexis is a student at St. Anthony Village High School and a voracious reader! It's an amazing book that will suck you in.( Don't forget to read the whole series!)
Note: Check out www.houseofnightseries.com for lots more information on this series.

Reviews by Alexis

Alexis is a student at St. Anthony Village High School and a voracious reader! It involves "shadowhunters", mudanes, vampires and lots more! The book also includes a little love story, a little mystery, and like I said, ACTION! It's an amazing book that will suck you into their world. And don't forget to check out the rest of the series!

Alexis says: Soulless by Gail Carriger is a very good book; it's a mix of victorian age and then a twist of supernatural creatures like vampires and werewolves. It's a comedy/drama/love story. It's got a great story line but may be a hard read, so you might want to carry a dictionary when you read it. (Most likely a book for older girls)
For 11th and 12th graders

Just in time for Halloween

The Paranormal Caught on Film: Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers 2010
"Ghostly figures, strange lights, heavenly apparitions and stigmata; is this photographic evidence of a world beyond our knowledge or understanding? Always on the social fringes, Evie’s early Sunday paper route puts her at the scene of a disturbing crime. When the murder victim turns out to be a childhood friend, Evie’s crush on Jonah (who found the body) and her uneasy friendship with Hadley take on an eerie quality. Drawn into the search for the murderer almost unwillingly, Evie simultaneously moves quickly into adulthood, facing complex struggles and fears. This debut novel will appeal to fans of Gail Giles’ What Happened to Cass McBride? (2006) or Peter Abrahams’ Reality Check (2009). A good option for reluctant readers, this thrilling story shows many instances of lyrical language, and the pacing is pitch-perfect. Evie’s isolation from her peers is a little hard to swallow, and her naïveté at a college party is a stretch for a 16-year-old, but for some readers, that may make her character that much more appealing. The less-than-clean ending may frustrate some but is a realistic touch.

These are only two of many new books the Media Center has recently added. But their enthusiasm for Obama has cooled, with only 57 percent of millennials approving of the way he has handled his job as president.

"This is an age group that went big for Obama and big for his message of change and has scaled back a bit," said Paul Taylor, executive vice president of the Washington-based Pew Research Center.

"Compared to their elders, this is a liberal generation, particularly on social issues," Taylor said. "They're very tolerant of newer social arrangements, gay marriage, receptive to immigrants. ... They are less supportive of their elders on assertive national security policy."

The generation remains quite optimistic despite

growing up in a time of war and economic recession. Nearly four out of 10 millennials are unemployed, a consequence of the poor economy as well as the large numbers of the generation staying in school.

Just 2 percent of the generation has military experience.

Nearly four in 10 millennials are in college, high school or trade school and two-thirds of those not in school said they plan to return to class someday. About half of those in high school, college or graduate school said they want to earn a graduate or professional school degree.

Asked to list their priorities, half of them said one of the most important things in their lives was to be a good parent, while 30 percent said it was having a successful marriage.

Only six of 10 millennials were raised by both parents. And just one of five millennials are married.

Nearly four in 10 have tattoos and one in four has a piercing on a part of the body other than an earlobe.

Most of the report's findings came from a January telephone survey of 2,020 adults, including 830 millennials.

How Millennial are You?

Whether good or bad, this is a survey that checks out how your behavior compares to the millennial generation.
